winter sun on water
by niniane

Winter-pale sunlight
leaps off Lake Ontario,
sparkles on the snow,
the glass,
the ice
shines between wrapping-paper snowflakes
hanging from the window.

Winter holds
the light in the January air captive:
warmth comes from within,
from the heart and the belly
and the blood
flowing to cold fingers and toes
as we walk;
warmth comes from within
and flows between.

In this cold air,
our bodies are filled with
the incandescence
of sunlight on water,
and warmth:
the memory and promise of
summer.
